Independence Day in Southbury
Anniversary of Congress’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and celebrates the courageous and liberty-loving actions of those who sparked our separation from the British Empire. Of course, the actions honored are not historically exclusive. On a larger scale, Independence Day celebrates a greater American commitment to freedom and self-determination. Throughout its five centuries of being, the small but resilient Town of Southbury has shown time and again its commitment to the values of our founding fathers. Indeed, the world first saw our patriotic spirit nearly 75 years ago. Soon after villagers spotted a suspicious black Mercedes traveling about town, Southbury became one of the first battlegrounds of World War II in 1937, when the German-American Bund attempted to build its camp in the Kettletown area. Immediately, the townspeople of Southbury set into motion. Encouraged by a disdain of intolerance and oligarchy, the ancestors of our town established Southbury’s zoning board for one special purpose: to drive out the Bund. A vote was quickly passed establishing the board, which passed but one ordinance. No land in Southbury was to be used for military purposes, except for those conducted through the U.S. armed forces. Amid the many picnics, reunions, and barbeques that take place today, the town of Southbury has a special stake in the holiday. The courage and dedication that our hometown displayed are the same values that Independence Day seeks to observe, reminding all of truths held to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and that governments must derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. I am looking for information of all sorts on the Bund, good and bad. I do have Scott Freeland's book (which I have mixed feelings over). Is there more out there? I'd like to chat with anyone who has information on every side of this group. I'm particularly looking for stories of German-American people and organizations who opposed the Bund. And I'm interested in any kind of information.
