Touring Europe on a bicycle can be a unique and rewarding experience

If I was not traveling by bicycle I would never have been in Tipperary, eating an apple as I leaned against a stone wall outside the cemetery on the east side of the Irish town. And I would have never met The Groper if not for my bike -- loaded with panniers, handlebar bag and camping gear -- which caught the eye of the old Irishman and led him to me. One night in the woods of County Armagh in Northern Ireland -- during a time of sectarian violence known as "The Troubles" -- I was stealth (free) camping. On that night I was accosted by two men. The next night I would be accosted by two more men, whose invitation -- "Come out with your hands up" -- was not the most cordial of greetings. But that's another story -- a long story -- best left for another time. I've taken a bike to Europe four times, spending 11 months wandering the roads by day, camping by night. When camping wasn't an option, I've stayed at hostels, B&Bs (bed and breakfast) and a couple of hotels. I've ridden in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, England, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein -- a country entirely within the Alps, about 15 miles long, home to 30,000-to-35,000 people and according to the British tabloid the Daily Mail, available for rent at £40,000 a night. Screaming Frenchmen -- who simply wanted to bestow on me an act of human kindness -- have chased me down the road. In Northern Ireland I was tracked by a closed-circuit camera as I rolled down the road, ambushed by British soldiers, ambushed by masked men wearing balaclavas and interviewed by a newspaper (I imagine the story had a tabloid headline something along the lines of "Blithering idiot rides into Armagh"). In the same vein of traveling in a land of civil unrest, I've dodged spike strips in the Basque region of Spain and spent a very sleepless night in the foothills of the Pyrenees, my tent surrounded by spent ammunition cartridges. The bike has allowed me to travel to places off the beaten path. I seldom see the backpacker crowd who travel with their Eurorail passes or the tourists who travel by bus and can afford to stay in hotels. I'm rarely where they are. Last year, riding in Denmark and Sweden, I did not speak to a single American during my four weeks on the road. The Danes and the Swedes always approached me speaking their native language.

And compared to the scarcity of hotel rooms in Europe, the high population density has resulted in a good amount of what is called BNB (Bed'n'Breakfast) capacity. It cost me 40 euros a night to rent an entire apartment for 6 days in Brussels.
