A futuristic take on Antigone's tale

A group of 20 students and recent graduates of the John Abbott College's Professional Theatre Program will be presenting Sophocles' 'Antigone' at the John Abbott College Casgrain Studio Theatre from July 19 to July 22.

Even though the original play was first performed in Ancient Greece, this theatrical piece deals with themes of violence, power, sex, religion and family; themes that create the fabric of our society today.

The play tells the story of Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus in Greek mythology, who tries to secure a respectable burial for her brother Polynices despite the king’s opposition. The cast of actors, technicians and designers wishes to bring the age-old play to life for a modern day audience and have thus traded in togas and spears for leather jackets and machine guns.

Director Trevor Barrette thinks this is a play that all can appreciate but especially those who have read the play before or seen it live.

“Whether you’re seeing it for the first time or for the hundredth time or whether you’ve read it before, it doesn’t matter. We’re bringing new qualities,  we’re bringing out new things in the text. We’re using a section of another play to set up Antigone a bit more so people who are seeing this for the first time are not going to be missing out. They’re going to understand the story from the very beginning,” he said.

This volume contains three masterpieces by the Greek playwright Sophocles, widely regarded since antiquity as the greatest of all the tragic poets. The vivid translations, which combine elegance and modernity, are remarkable for their lucidity and accuracy, and are equally suitable for reading for pleasure, study, or theatrical performance. The selection of Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Electra not only offers the reader the most influential and famous of Sophocles' works, it also presents in one volume the two plays dominated by a female heroic figure, and the experience of the two great dynasties featured in Greek tragedy--the houses of Oedipus and Agamemnon.
