Lehigh Phoenix to close Milwaukee plant

But changed its name to Lehigh Phoenix after being purchased by Visant Corp. of Armonk, N.Y., in June 2007.

The Milwaukee plant had about 100 employees at the time of the acquisition. Lehigh Phoenix also operates plants in Hagerstown, Md., and Rockaway, N.J.

In 2009, Lehigh Phoenix filed a notice with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development indicating that it planned to lay off 54 employees as a result of a consolidation of its production and administrative operations.

Lehigh Phoenix management said at that time that some operations would remain at the location.

When the acquisition by Visant occurred, Visant management said the deal would provide an expanded platform to increase the company’s presence in the trade market segment. Visual Systems had provided overhead transparencies for a variety of publishers as well as various other visual communication products such as book covers, teaching aids, inserts and overlays.

Visant is a marketing and publishing services company that serves the school, direct marketing, fragrance and cosmetics sampling, and educational publishing markets.

Sadly, this guy will not get the “I Survived…” t-shirt.

Yes, I ignored sage advice when, on an unusally cool Memorial Day weekend, I decided to get some last minute planting in…which proved to be deadly for this Rock Verbena.

So when’s the best time to plant in Phoenix?  Generally speaking, plant in October.  This is contrary to what most of us transplants (pun-alicious!) learned, I know, but planting in the fall gives plants plenty of time to get established before winter…and plenty of time to prepare for the summer heat.

If fall is impossible, planting in the spring is the second best option…again, generally speaking.  Shoot for mid-March, after the threat of frost has passed and before the heat kicks in.

One more thing…plants that are native to the Sonoran Desert are less fussy since they already live here.  They can often be planted just about anytime.  But to up your chances of success, stick with fall or spring.
