1 Corinthians 16: Open Doors

Because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.

In college, I spent a lot of time hanging out at a Christian bookstore called the Open Door. I couldn’t afford all of the books I wanted to read, so I would often sit in there for an hour or more, reading and learning all I could.

It would not be until years later, however, until I realized the significance of the store’s name. In 1 Corinthians 16, Paul discusses his plans to visit his friends in Corinth. When he does, he mentioned he would be in the city of Ephesus until the Pentecost holiday. Why? Because the Lord had provided an open door for effective work.

This concept of the open door is critical for us to realize in our spiritual lives. When we are on the lookout for God’s leading in us, we must be ready to walk through the doors he opens. The Scriptures affirm both that we can do nothing without God and that all things are possible with God. The difference is to walk through the open doors he provides.

This is true whether it is a new school, a new relationship, a new job, or a new project of any kind. When we look for the doors God opens, we must still walk in faith, but we know our path will be clear. Why? Because God is walking with us and ahead of us.

What door is God opening in your life today?

THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Nothing about God's justice ever changes

However, it demands in Exodus 22:16 that fornicators marry, and declare in 1 Corinthians 6:9 that if they don't repent of that sin, they won't enter heaven. There are other crimes for which scripture demands execution, but these are the two main

What Does the Bible Actually Say About Marriage?

Someone invariably mentions 1 Corinthians 13, the famous "Love Chapter." Love is patient, love is kind, love never insists on its own way and so forth. Wonderful advice for marriage, but Paul was not talking about marriage. He was addressing a church

Are You a Mature or Immature Leader?

I can tell you that I'll start reading at 1 Corinthians 1:10 and continue my running commentary from there, asking the question: “How is Paul relating and responding to the Corinthians who are complaining about him, and what can we apply to our lives

1 Corinthians 16:14- Loving Others « Daily Verses

“Do everything in love.”

Why is this so challenging sometimes? Love is absolutely everywhere in my life. I’m shown constant love from my friends, family, and the leaders and parents in my church home. The Lord loves me so intensely that my mind gets blown every time I try to put it into perspective. Love is everywhere.  This is a command that always sticks out to me when I read the bible and in result, it’s a constant command the Lord puts on my heart. Yet I still find myself bitter towards other bitter people who I encounter, why should I let that bother me? I’m held to different standards than this world, how they act shouldn’t justify my being able to do the same thing. I know in my heart, that I’m to love others in any way I can and should take whatever chance I’m given to do so. For instance I work in a smoothie shop, somedays I get so much joy by serving people drinks and just offering them a warm smile and good service. Other times I get frustrated and impatient with people who are rude and unfriendly. I know by the way the Lord has loved me and by what I’ve learned through him that the happy person should make me just as joyful as the person who’s rude. It’s hard to remind myself that people’s attitude shouldn’t affect how I love them, but unfortunately I go back to focusing on myself, and my feelings when faced with situations like that, instead of the fact that I should be doing all I can to show them love. I don’t know how their days been, or what their life has been like and I should have the same mindset when serving all people. The mindset that everyone deserves a warm smile along with a cold smoothie. It’s not like I can flip a switch and I’m going to magically be wonderful at this, it goes hand in hand with waking up everyday and reminding myself that I am the Lords and that I am his tool. Doing this out of love comes from the joy of knowing the Lord and wanting to serve him. It’s never said in the bible that it’s going to be easy, but honestly I’m glad it’s not. It gives me room to learn, to grow, and to push myself to be better for Christ, which I think is one of the greatest things the Lord allows us to do.
