Influential Iowa Rep. King assesses GOP field
Washington (CNN) - A well-known Iowa congressman assumed the role of political pundit on Tuesday, sizing up the strengths and weaknesses of fellow Republicans who are running for president.
Rep. Steve King represents Iowa's 5th district including Council Bluffs and Sioux City. CNN caught up with the congressman on a flight from Des Moines to Washington, D.C. What King thinks matters to many Republicans. He represents one of Iowa's most conservative districts and he's been repeatedly elected to the House since his first election in 2002. In March, King hosted the Conservative Principles Conference in Des Moines that was well attended by many conservatives, including some who were considering presidential bids. He is a vocal member of the House Tea Party Caucus and a frequent speaker at tea party rallies.
King is considered a thought leader among Iowa Republicans ahead of the August 13 Ames Straw Poll - a showdown between GOP presidential candidates that will test their popularity and could be a sign of their electability.
During the interview, King assessed the GOP field. The five-term congressman admitted he is "close personal friends" with Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. Both lawmakers have frequently been seen together rallying supporters at tea party rallies.
However, King has not endorsed any candidate. His office tells CNN that the will wait awhile.
Regarding the three-term congresswoman, King said, "It looks like Michele Bachmann has the momentum. And the campaign has the energy."
Regarding the high-stakes Ames contest, the Hawkeye state native said the expectation for Bachmann to win is high, but hedged that prospect.
"If she finishes second she's going to look pretty good," he said.
When asked about Bachmann's weaknesses as a campaigner King demurred, saying she's "right on the issues."
But he did raise one query.
"I think we don't really know what kinds of weaknesses a conservative woman might bring to the top of the ticket," he said.
King similarly praised Texas Rep. Ron Paul and conservative businessman Herman Cain.
"I think Ron Paul is underestimated," King said. "He has a group of solid core, very dedicated supporters that will be there. Getting people to show up at the [Ames] straw poll takes an organizational ability. You need dedicated people."
But King was also doubtful of Paul's overall chances.

Ft.worth tx mid cities outdoor track ... - R/C Tech Forums
I would be very interested as long as it is an offroad track. We will be moving up there in June. Any idea what area the track would be located? One of the homes we are looking at is right off Precinct and Martin Dr (just north of the Birdville Stadium). I would be glad to lend a hand moving dirt and helping with the track build once we get moved up there! How is the Hobby Shop in Crowley? The only decent shops I frequent are Roys (close to work) and Mikes (I race there). I head to Wild Bills when no one else has it because I know they will but you generally pay full boat at Wild Bills. T&T is good too but it is in Plano and I live on the west side of Fort Worth. I would like to see a track in the mid-cities. Maybe an 1/8th scale track with a dirt oval option. Running at The Indoor Track in Richland Hills was a lot of fun back in the day (1/10th Scale half mile indoor clay dirt oval) and I miss running Dirt Oval. I'm looking into racing 1/8 offroad and have been to most all the tracks around Dallas. Seems like Granbury is the closest for folks west of Ft. Worth. I really enjoyed running that track about a month ago. Mike's outdoor track looks promising, especially once they resurface it. Indy RC World is the only place I know of that races 1/8 on a consistent basis in the D/FW metroplex. yes, i do agree track if mid cities would be nice, gas prices are not going down anytime soon, so a closer drive to do our beloved hobby would be awsome...grandbury track closed that i know of, and crowley hobby shop decent, but not near as nice and roys and mikes.. crowley track is a play drive area with dirt piles and rocks and thats it..too bad. IMO....that is where the members/racers come in. If people just show up on race day and expect to throw their cars out on a full prepped track. It does not happen that way without LOTS of cash from the track. Where I currently race there are about 8-10 of us that have put in the work to get the track ready for the Texas RC Pro Race. However there are about 60 members. If even half of the members were helping we would have been done in probably a week or two. Instead it is going to take the better part of a month. I guess my point is, if the event is suppose to start at 1pm it should be expected that racers show up at 10am to help prep the track. I do understand that not every racer can show up every event early.
