Defender Lost to the Sands of Morecambe Bay

At 10.30pm on the evening of Sunday July 24, Bay Search and Rescue (BSAR) received a request for assistance from the owner of a Land Rover, which had become stuck in a channel just off the shoreline near Bolton Le Sands in Lancashire. The vehicle had become trapped whilst driving on the beach in the soft sand in the bottom of a water gully. Several attempts had already been made by members of the public and local farmers with tractors and ropes get to the vehicle out but without success. By the time Gary Parsons, Bay SAR Station Officer, took the call it was already after dark and unfortunately the tide had already engulfed the vehicle.  As there was no life at risk the decision was taken not to mobilise the BSAR team due to the potential risk involved with any attempt at a vehicle recovery in the dark and during high tide. It was decided that as the vehicle would by now be irreparably damaged and BSAR is manned by volunteers with day jobs, that the team would travel around the coast to the Lancashire side of the bay on the Monday evening to attempt a recovery. The purpose was simply to remove the vehicle from the beach so the owner would salvage what he could. The team would at least benefit from the awkward position of the vehicle and its potential recovery as a live flood rescue training exercise.   Bay Search and Rescue have some very unique abilities in their two Hagglund BV206 tracked amphibious rescue vehicles, well suited to the bays treacherous sands, and reaching the vehicle even in a moving tide, posed no problem. The team used their vehicles extensively in Cockermouth during the floods where they worked in partnership with Cumbria Fire and Rescue. Unfortunately the power of the previous tides and the relentless grip of the sands was just too much.  Gary said, 'Had the team been called at the time the incident happened, I would have been very confident that we could have recovered the vehicle, but unfortunately we were not and unfortunately the vehicle was a total loss and possibly now a permanent feature on the bay.  BSAR get called to many vehicles which get stuck around the bay, and to date have never failed to recover any of them.'  He added that, 'The Bay is simply no place for road-going or even 'off-road' vehicles.

The finest navy-blue leather with white contrasting seams refines door and side panels alike and adorns dashboard, center console and the Recaro sport seats. The new seats offer much better lateral support than the stock seats. But that’s not all: Their leather upholstery is masterfully sewn using white baseball-style cross stitching and adds a modern contrast to the classic Land Rover interior. The shells of the seatbacks are painted white to match the exterior.

The headliner is made from Alcantara dyed the same color as the leather appointments. Precision-sewn white seams add magnificent highlights here as well.
