Cherish yourself

Better known as the Baron of Botox and for his skincare line rather than his health advice, Dr Fredric Brandt advocates that one should not be defined by age.

THE moment Dr Fredric Brandt stepped into the L’Avenue restaurant in Paris recently, he was recognised by none other than the renowned American journalist, author and TV news host Barbara Walters.

She was lunching at L’Avenue, known for its high-wattage patrons whenever they are in town. (Think Beyonce and Jay-Z.) She called out in delight to Dr Brandt, a celebrity dermatologist whose work has earned him recognition among the A-listers in the United States.

Based in New York and Miami, Dr Brandt was in Paris for a pit-stop where four Malaysian journalists had been invited to meet him last month.

“Many people take better care of their possessions than themselves,” said the 62-year-old doctor who read medicine at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“You can buy a new car but not a new body. So cherish what you have,” said Dr Brandt, who practises Ashtanga yoga six times a week.

To him, looking good means eating well and not neglecting exercise. It sounds ironic, coming from someone who has been labelled the “Baron of Botox”.

“I’ve been called many things,” he acknowledged.

(A press statement stated that he was at the forefront of the “injectable” revolution in which he was involved in trials that led to the approval of Botox and collagen injectables.)

But Dr Brandt was genuine in his advice. He made known too, that he is not in favour of botox treatment at too early an age, referring to news reports about more and more young women going for it.

“Don’t do it at too young an age. You have years ahead of you,” he said.

He kept stressing on eating less sugar as well.

Sugar, he said, would cause a process known as glycation. Simply put, it would break down collagen and lead to skin losing its elasticity.

So how do you tame sugar cravings?

Wait 10 minutes, he said. Chances are, the craving will be gone. Besides, there is always the option of healthy fruits such as apples for that shot of sugar.

“And stay away from artificial sweetener, which is very bad for health,” he added.

At L’Avenue, his staff brought him a chocolate cake to mark his birthday (which falls on June 26) which he took a few bites of later.

“This is enough to age me 20 years,” he joked, referring to the sweet cake. “Give me my Collagen Booster!
