Second phase of Toledo's private garbage pickup Monday

Trash hauler Republic Services will take over half the city’s garbage collection routes and begin fielding customer service calls Monday, the company’s general manager, David Vossmer, reminded residents Friday. He also revealed two newly adorned garbage trucks that feature images of Toledo on their sides.

Republic has been picking up recyclables in the city since July 11, the first phase of the transition to the private company from the city. Monday marks the next milestone.

Pick-up days will remain the same as they are now, and there will be no more “Leap Forward” days for city holidays. The only change in collection days will be for six national holidays. During those weeks, pickup will be pushed back one day with Saturday pickup. Regular pickup days will resume the following week.

Republic will also take over customer service duties from the city Monday. The customer service phone number will remain the same.

Mr. Vossmer’s reminders came in the parking lot of Bowsher High School in South Toledo, where he was flanked by two of 33 garbage trucks that will all eventually feature scenes of Toledo on their sides. The company purchased the city’s garbage truck fleet for $8 million. Two of those trucks were on display Friday, each featuring a different scene — one of the downtown Toledo skyline and one of the high-level bridge at dusk. The company plans on using three or four additional scenes, too.

Republic will take over the other half of the city’s trash collection Aug. 15, completing the transition. Waste will still go to the city-owned Hoffman Road Landfill.

The switch to private trash collection is expected to save the city $2.8 million this year and up to $6 million annually starting next year, according to Mayor Mike Bell. To facilitate the outsourcing, Lucas County signed a five-year deal with Republic, with an option to renew for up to five more years, according to Jim Shaw, the county’s sanitary engineer.

Most Toledo residents will pay more for trash collection, with monthly rates increasing Sept. 1 from $8.50 to $8.95. Those who qualify for a homestead exemption will continue to pay $5 a month.

Edward Moore, the city’s director of public service, said residents will be able to offset most or all of that higher cost through a new program called My Republic Rewards, under which residents can register online to earn points based on the amount of recyclables the garbage truck on their route picks up. Residents can begin earning points Sept. 1, which are redeemable for discounts at Imagination Station, the Toledo Zoo, some restaurants, and other program partners. Residents will receive information about the rewards program in the mail, including a personal identification number needed to register for the program.
