Choreographer's new work mixes dancers and 5000 ping-pong balls
In a converted church not far from Hudson's downtown, Jonah Bokaer's dancers are rehearsing a work in progress. The cellist who will be performing live for the premiere couldn't be here today, so instead the dancers' movements are accompanied by an ambient sound score of passing cars, children at play in a nearby apartment complex and the occasional ripple of bird song.
Bokaer sits to one side, quietly taking notes as the rehearsal progresses. Soft-spoken and disarmingly polite, he creates a low-key work atmosphere that complements his collaborative, flexible approach to dance-making. Based in New York City but perhaps better known in Europe than at home, he has co-created with visual artists and architects, computer technicians and design firms, writers and theater directors.
"There's a history of collaboration between theater and dance, and I'm trying to turn that on its head a little bit (to create) a synthesis of art forms that depend on each other in very fragile ways," Bokaer explained in an interview during the company's lunch break. "The idea is to end up with more as a result -- a fuller movement and viewing experience."
Starting Wednesday at Jacob's Pillow, Bokaer presents the U.S. premiere of "Why Patterns," in which the dancers interact with 5,000 ping-pong balls, and "Recess," from 2010, a collaboration with artist-architect Daniel Arsham .
Trained in dance at Cornell University and the North Carolina School of the Arts , Bokaer was just 18 when he joined the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in 2000. While dancing with the company (he left in 2007), he earned a degree in visual and media studies at The New School in New York City, where he learned to work with 3-D animation and motion capture.
"Building movement on the screen gave me a very different sense of space and of how to design and section space with a bit more of an architectural eye," Bokaer said. He used digital choreographic software to create three works that he collected in the evening-long "Three Cases of Amnesia," premiered in 2008.
Bokaer met Arsham when he was designing sets for Cunningham. "Recess" is a dialogue between the two men that changes from venue to venue as they explore artistic concepts through video, performance and conversation. At the Pillow, the centerpiece of the work will be a single sheet of paper, 30 yards long and almost 4 yards wide.
"The choreography exhausts all possibilities between the body, the paper and the space, and also creates architectural forms and metaphors for time and space," Bokaer said.
