WAS THE £100M DIANA FUND A DISASTER?

Not for much longer though.

It has been revealed that the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund is to close by the end of next year or sooner if the £13million which remains in its bank account can be spent beforehand.

Established within five days of Diana’s death on August 31 1997, the fund was originally meant to be a lasting legacy of the humanitarian work the Princess engaged in so wholeheartedly in life.

Sadly, things have not quite worked out that way.

Although it has raised a great deal for many good causes, whether they are ones that would have been close to her heart is questionable.

When she married Prince Charles and became Princess of Wales, Diana took on the patronage of more than 800 charities.

But after her divorce she scaled down her support to six: Centrepoint, which helps the homeless, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, the Leprosy Mission, the National Aids Trust, the Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Trust and the English National Ballet.

She also remained committed to the eradication of landmines and one of her last working trips was to Angola where she donned body armour and visor to promote the work of clearing agency The Halo Trust.

However, although the memorial fund was set up to commemorate and continue her work, in recent years scant regard has been shown for the issues she was concerned about.

It began promisingly enough with roughly £1million each being dispensed to Centrepoint, Great Ormond Street, the Elton John Aids Foundation and the Osteopathic Centre for Children. Dozens of smaller grants went to other bodies including the National Meningitis Trust, Barnardo’s UK, ChildLine and Help The Aged.

It also gave money to build homes for orphans in Rwanda and to support a hospice in South Africa. In its first year it paid out £15.5million. Then it began to branch out until it was giving huge grants to organisations involved with asylum seekers and prison reform and paying smaller sums to a diverse range of smaller, less mainstream charities.

Among these were the American Friends Of Covent Garden which received £19,000 in 1998. In the same year the fund gave £57,970 to the Australian Council On Smoking to mount an anti-smoking campaign among the Aboriginal community of Perth.

In 1999 the refugee organisation Albanian Youth Action Ltd received £287,000.
