Perth's first ocean pool could be built at Cottesloe beach and open in the summer of 2013 under a proposal to be unveiled today.

Inspired by the popularity of ocean pools in the Eastern States and overseas, the six professionals behind the idea - a mix of residents and Cottesloe beachgoers - said the pool would add to the Cottesloe beach experience.

Under the proposal, which comes after 18 months of work, a seawater-fed swimming pool would be built off the beach between the Indiana Tearooms and the northern side of the Cottesloe groyne.

The 33m by 10m pool would have four swimming lanes with provision for a children's wading pool and disabled access. Extensive public seating, a lifeguard viewing platform and a cafe-kiosk to offset running costs are also proposed.

Tom Locke, a Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club stalwart, said the Cottesloe beach pool committee wanted a community facility at an iconic spot.

"There's about 30 of them around Sydney," he said. "They're part of the culture and they're part of the beach life there. They've never been so in Perth.

"Why can't we have one in Perth? "This is Perth's most popular beach, it's an iconic beach."

Committee member Deon White, managing director of urban design firm Roberts Day, said it was important the pool was integrated with the environment and the group wanted public feedback to determine its location and design.

The pool would cost several million dollars and private funding is being explored.

A Cottesloe beach pool was first mooted after the fatal shark attack on Ken Crew at North Cottesloe in 2001. But money hurdles and a change of local council contributed to it falling by the wayside.

The group said studies had found a natural sea-fed pool was not possible because of significant seasonal tidal changes and large build-up of seaweed.

Cottesloe mayor Kevin Morgan said the idea had great merit and after Cottesloe's beach pool closed in the 1990s on health grounds, the council's foreshore vision included an ocean pool.

But he said it was not a funding priority and the location, design and how it would be paid for had to be addressed.
