Thumbs up to Mr.Dewitt, he has the correct answer. A duel was to uphold your honor, and many honorable men participated in them, some to the death. I have an interesting tale of duels in Louisiana which was well known for them, including the famous sand bar duel in the Mississippi river that Jim Bowie participated in. But this duel was never fought for it was between two people that was once the best of friends. One of them was a well known duelist that had a very quick temper and was not quite 5 foot tall, but had killed several men in duels already. His friend was 6 foot 6 inches and quite large. One day over politics they argued and the short guy felt his honor was questioned and challenged his now ex-friend to a duel. The now ex-friend knew quite well of the others reputation as a great dueler.Since it was the custom for the one that is challenged to pick the dueling weapons the tall ex friend thought for a few moments and accepted the challenge. But his choice of dueling methods were 10 lb sledge hammers in 5 foot of water. This brought laughter from the expert duelist and their friendship was renewed. But then again he may have decided that he would have no chance of winning a duel under those conditions and that may be why he decided he was not so dis-honored after all. But it is a true tale that actually happened.
