You see, I happened to grow up in those long gone, the terrible days when the punishment fitted the crime. . . well most of the time. . . with me at least anyway.

Let me tell you those first few days at a time, but let me first make a suggestion that could slow a lot of youth violence and serious crime in this state of ours. This is called the national service - and we knew in the 1950s, "Nasho".

National Service taught many of us young guys right from wrong, especially when it concerns the respect of others.

You see, most guys I served with at Wacol southwest of Brisbane in the first external promotion of 1954 were fairly worried about becoming Nashos. They did not know what to expect.

This was particularly the case in my hut because, when I arrived at Wacol with a bunch of friends Maryborough, including my older brother, Marty, I was separated from them because I was bigger than my comrades, and placed in a hut with great guys, mainly in northern Queensland.

I had no worries about going into national service, because I was in the cadets at my school, St Brendan College, Yeppoon, and even had a couple of weeks of army training in the Sellheim military camp, west of Townsville, with lots of other young guys from all over the state.

So I was quite surprised to hear my new friends Nasho express some apprehension of being forced military service for three months in place and two weeks each year for the next two years.

But all that changed after the first few weeks of training of the army under a lot of very difficult but very fair, professional soldiers.

Things were not going so well in the cabin next to us, in a company, because in this hut there was a tyrant very large and aggressive simply took what he wanted the other guy in the cabin. You can be sitting on a stool polishing your work uniform or brass cleaning your rifle SMLE 0303, perhaps with a little food or soft drinks next to you, and this reflex would simply pick up your cookies or a sandwich and eat it, so take your bottle of soft drink and swill down. If you argued that it would give you a boost and leave.

This went on the first day of camp at one of the guys came up with a brilliant idea. He had one of his buddies cabin sat polishing his brass work, with a half-full bottle of soda at his side, when the big bully walked up, grabbed the bottle and swigged down a couple of sips before to become red and almost spitting fluid out of his mouth and around the hut.
