Residents: NextG Still A Headache

Village resident Maureen Leone asked the Board when NextG plans to install sound abatement equipment. Leone and other residents have complained of a loud noise being emitted from the units in warmer weather when the internal fan within the box is operating. Leone claims she has received two letters from NextG saying the company will install the sound buffer, but it has not happened.

Garden City Mayor Donald T. Brudie said that he asks Village Administrator Robert L. Schoelle Jr. to contact NextG on a weekly basis, sometimes biweekly, to check on the status of the installation of the sound abatement equipment. Schoelle reported that NextG told him that the equipment will be installed this week.

Leone asked if she can call the police department to issue the company a summons for disturbing the peace if she hears the noise after a certain hour in the evening. “I don’t think it’s right,” she said.

“We fully believe that they are going to install the equipment, and install it at every installation in Garden City,” Schoelle said.

Linden Street resident Mary Timmins said Garden City resident and attorney Kevin Walsh recently attended a Massapequa Park Board of Trustees meeting and “stood up” to NextG representatives. “They bent over backwards for him,” she claimed. “They bent over backwards for Massapequa Park, the same way they did for Princeton, New Jersey. They did not bend for us.” Timmins said she watched them “cave” to Walsh’s demand that the systems be placed a certain distance from the ground.

Village Counsel Gerard Fishberg responded that NextG did “cave” to Garden City by not installing the boxes in the right-of-way located in front of homes. “That’s primarily the difference between what’s happening in Massapequa Park and what’s happening in Garden City,” he said. “Massapequa Park has allowed the boxes in the right-of-way in front of homes.”

After a large public outcry, Fishberg said NextG representatives were told “in no uncertain terms” by Garden City representatives that they could not install their equipment on utility poles located along the street in front of homes. They were able to negotiate to have them install their equipment on utility poles in backyards.

Miami Beach - Mario Reyes Killed When Struck By Bentley

Miami Beach, Florida - Mario Reyes, 59, was killed Saturday while crossing the street when he was hit by a Bentley driven by NFL wide receiver, Donte Stallworth.

Initial reports indicate that Stallworth may have been driving while under the influence of alcohol at the time although blood alcohol test results have not yet been released.

Reyes was described by his brother-in-law, Francisco Fajardo as a family man who spent all of his free time with his wife of almost twenty years, Catalina and their fifteen year old daughter, Daniela.

Renier Calana, who worked with Reyes unloading cargo containers at the Port of Miami for Bernuth Agencies, a shipping company, told reporters that Reyes was going to the bus stop.

Stallworth signed a $35 million contract with the Cleveland Browns before last season and was scheduled to receive a $4,750,000 signing bonus on Friday.
