ILMINSTER Chartered accountant Robert Stone, has urged small businesses such as internet traders, private tutors, personal trainers and life coaches to be scrupulously honest when declaring their income, as they are the latest businesses to be targeted by the taxman.
He said the tax office intends to send out web bots (automatic search programmes) to scour the internet for details of sales and services advertised by UK businesses. The information will then be compared to sources such as bank interest and tax returns and it is a common misconception that if a business makes no profit, then its income source need not be declared.
Mr Stone remarked: “This is the latest in a series of campaigns, which have so far dealt with doctors and plumbers. It’s part of the tax office’s initiative to raise extra taxes from undeclared earnings. Restaurants are next in line. I would urge anyone who thinks that they have declarable income to seek proper advice before they are targeted, as an early approach can help to minimise tax penalties.
