They are coming from as far as New Zealand to attend the Eastern Apicultural Society’s (EAS) annual conference Monday through Friday, July 25 to 29, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Bill Turnbull, co-host of “BBC Breakfast,” Britain’s most watched morning TV show, will be the event’s keynote speaker.

For local residents interested in becoming beekeepers, the event’s apiary at the hotel will open Monday and Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., and some of the region’s top honeybee “wranglers” will be available to demonstrate techniques and answer questions, says Celeste Nadworny, librarian for the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association.

The interest in beekeeping is soaring.

“When I started keeping bees seven years ago, most of the association’s members were older men,” says Jeff McGuire, president of the beekeepers association, and one of the bee wranglers in the EAS bee yard next week. “Today, we’re seeing more young people and more families getting into beekeeping.”

About five years ago, she remembers, when news of the bee disease started to spread, newcomers filled Mencucci’s lecture hall at Davies Career and Technical High School. The beekeepers association launched a second school. Last spring, the association offered three beekeeping schools to accommodate the swelling demand.

“There are more women, more young people,” she says. “They’re saying ‘I just want to help the bees.’ ”

The local-food movement also contributed to the growing interest in beekeeping, says McGuire. “People want to know where their food comes from,” he says.
