Career expo scheduled for Aug. 4

The Georgia Department of Labor Career Center in Monroe will have its annual career expo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 4 at Corinth Christian Church, located at 1635 Highway 81, Loganville. 

“Most career centers have career fairs at least once a year, and we decided to do ours a little earlier this year before the Christmas season gets under way,” said Lori Chafin, manager of the GDOL center in Monroe. “While this is called the Monroe Veterans Career Expo 2011, and we wanted to have a focus on veterans because Walton County does have a number of unemployed veterans, this will be open to anyone seeking a job.”

Some of the employers that will be at the event include Turner Broadcasting Corp., Apollo Staffing, Home Depot, Chick-fil-A and Verizon, among others. 

Work began back in May organizing the event, when Chafin assumed her new role at the local career center. Local veterans employment representative Stanley Copeland and local employer marketing representative Jessica Jenkins first scouted out locations for the event and settled on Corinth, which according to Chafin has offered to host job fairs for GDOL before and is in a good location with ample parking and working area. 

Once the location is settled, GDOL officials begin recruiting potential employers, beginning first with those who list positions with the department. Then Copeland and Jenkins start beating the streets to find additional potential employers for the fair. 

Now the pieces are in place and it is up to those interested to come prepared for the event.

“They will have the opportunity to communicate with employers, network and have the experience of talking to employers about their abilities and experience,” Chafin said. “Anyone coming should have resumés in hand and be dressed to impress. Walk in like you will get hired. Some of the employers will do interviews on the spot, so people should be prepared.”

Chafin said those interested can visit the career center, located at 225 Alcovy St., Suite B5, in Monroe, to receive free resumé assistance as well as to brush up on interviewing skills to get ready for the career expo. This assistance is offered throughout the year at the career center. 

“A big piece of the job search is knowing how to talk to employers, telling them what your experience and skills are, writing resumés, networking and knowing where to look for jobs. Even filling out online applications can be difficult. We offer help in all of these areas and more,” Chafin said.
