FLINT, Michigan — It’s a laboratory that allows research on how a gas pedal could slowly ease a driver’s foot back if a car gets too close to another.
Or how by touching a map, people could literally “feel” where the most vacant homes in Genesee County were. Or how a computer could physically guide kindergartners’ fingers as they learn how to write the alphabet.
Kettering University has gone virtual.
An engeering lab dedicated to haptics — a focus on the sense of touch — is laying the groundwork for studies in robotics, military technology and hospital equipment here.
“We believe there are many opportunities for haptics, especially in Michigan,” said Mehrdad Zadeh, assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering at Kettering.
“It allows us to feel or manipulate objects and virtual environments. We want to provide more information through the sense of touch.”
The lab is equipped with technolgy that allow students to ‘touch’ virtual objects through forces, vibrations and movements.
The lab has recently been in the spotlight because of growing research projects that have been published and presented at conferences around the country over the last year.
On one side of the room is a gaming steering wheel and simulated gas pedal that has allowed students to study how haptics technology can reduce vehicle collisions — part of efforts that have already resulted in Kettering applying for a patent on a technology that would allow drivers to control car functions through haptics.
Nearby is a “CyberGlove” that sends vibrations to a person’s fingers and palm, allowing a student to create a virtual map that may help other students “feel” areas with the most available apartments near Kettering.
Kalanathlalith Gunturu, an international graduate student from India, 24, is working on a program that would allow a computer to teach people to write in Hindi.
The force from what’s called a phantom wand physically guides a learner’s hands into the correct motions to write letters.
“For people who want to learn a new language, this would be a good starting point,” said Gunturu, who is pursuing his masters degree in computer engineering.
“When I started learning (English), we would pencil over letters hundreds of times but you still had no guidance other than your teacher or mom sitting by you telling you you’re doing it wrong.
