Fire Department Uses Jaws of Life After Car Accident Near Tufts, Three Sent to ...
Three people "had to be extricated with the jaws of life" after a serious car accident at Powderhouse Boulevard and Packard Avenue Thursday evening, according to Somerville Fire Department District Chief James King.
Three people were transported to the hospital, two with potentially serious injuries, according to King.
The accident happened at approximately 5:45 p.m. It involved an older Toyota Camry and newer Toyota Matrix. The three passengers in the Camry were put into ambulances on stretchers.
Witnesses who arrived on scene shortly after the accident said police and fire officials showed up almost immediately.
Meghan, a nurse practitioner who did not want to give her last name, drove up to the scene in the immediate aftermath of the accident. She said she spoke to the three injured people, who were trapped in the Camry.
"They didn't have much to say; they were conscious," said Meghan.
"They were kind of lucky it was rush hour," she said, because many people were walking and driving home and able to call the police and fire departments.
The driver of the Matrix did not appear physically injured, but was noticeably shaken shortly after the accident. She did not want to speak to Somerville Patch.
Dave Schaefer, who lives nearby, saw the accident out of the corner of his eye, he said.
"Over my headphones I heard something," he said. "My roommate ran up to the car and made sure everyone was conscious."
"There were three or four of us around here when it happened," he said. By the time he took out his cell phone to call 911, police had already arrived.
Schaefer added, "I just hope everybody is okay."
It was not immediately clear what hospital the injured people were taken to.
