Special events and activities on Saturday will benefits pets

For the first time, Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales will welcome leashed and friendly dogs into the park. They may visit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $5. They may also enjoy festivities called, "Dog Day of Summer" where half the proceeds will help support the Humane Society of Polk County. Each dog will receive a doggie gift bag with their $5 paid admission. Regular human admission rates will apply on this day; $10 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12.

The Dog Day of Summer event will operate from 9 a.m. until noon and will feature "Ask a Vet" with Dr. Mitsie Vargas from Orchid Springs Animal Hospital who will share tips on health and safety. "Ask a Trainer" with well-known area trainer, Bob Sokoloskis, will also be part of the furry affair.

The Doggie Bag, VIP Pet Resort, Groomingdales, Lasting Paws, and Invisible Fence are just some of the vendors who will have displays at the event. The Humane Society will also be there adopting out animals, as well as conducting pet contests.

"We will be doing the Most Unusual Dog contest, an Owner Look Alike contest, the Best Kisser, Most Talented, and the Cutest. The judges will be from Bok Tower and also Lisa Baker, the director of the Humane Society. There will be prize baskets for the top three winners," said Laura Chaikin, administrative assistant at the Humane Society of Polk County Inc.

Chaikin also said this is going to be a fun event for the community.

"A lot a people who work at Bok Tower are huge animal lovers and we feel privileged to partner with them. We are a nonprofit organization that only survives on donations from the public. We do not get any government assistance. It (finances to operate) only comes from the generosity of our citizens and any opportunity we get from the public or a chance to promote what we do is great. We are Polk County's only no-kill shelter," she said.

Chaikin, who has worked with the Humane Society for seven years, says although this is a canine event, half of the proceeds generated will be contributed to the general purpose of the Humane Society of Polk County who also serves the homeless feline population and even has a hamster up for adoption right now.

Something organizers are hoping will draw in the crowds is "Southern Santa." Being an animal lover himself, jolly ol' Saint Nick will be attending this event and will pose for pictures with the animals. Visitors can get a head start on holiday greeting cards and contribute to this "cause for all the paws" simultaneously.

Sometimes I go read other peoplez blogs and I listen to them chitty-chat-chat and just sit there thinking, what the hell are these people talking about. Is it me that I cannot understand a topic they are discussing or did I miss it somewhere in the chronicles of these peoplez brains. I dunno. Either way, if people could write a little more clearly, I could possibly understand the rat droppings they are speaking of which would lead to a much more stimulating blog-reading environment. Know what I mean here or am I just rambling about nothing. Go ahead, do it yourself one day and just go read some random blogs and see if some of them make any sense to you. Yeah, that's what I thought.
