I’ve had WD Passport drives in the past and appreciated their compact size and failure to, well, fail. Ever. Seriously, they were 100% reliable despite extensive travel and the inevitable banging around on the road. As many of you may know, the casing of the Passport has been redesigned, and I think it’s a nice improvement. Only slightly thicker than the old casing, it’s more than made up for by smaller width and depth. A better shape is achieved overall.
Most impressive to me is the ability of this passport drive to mount via a powered USB hub. My older Passport drives never did, and required a direct hookup on my machine’s USB port in order to mount to the desktop. That this does, is a big plus.
Note to Mac users: Yes, it is indeed formatted to Windows (NTFS), which I consider no problem at all for Mac users like myself. It takes all of one minute to reformat it to FAT32 (which reads both Mac & Windows) or the Mac format HFS. Just use disk utility.
A cable is included in the box and it’s ready to go. I was using it in just a few minutes. I’m looking forward to at least 2 years of productive backups on the go with this excellent product.
Purchased this hard drive for Black Friday deals week and have been very satisfactory with it. The drive is incredibly tiny, smaller than your hand, but is a very clean design.
The only hardware issue I have with it is the connector cable…it’s easily disconnected by barely moving it. I’m not sure if it’s the cable that it comes with, the input on the actual device or just the type of USB connector it is that has issues, but be aware when transferring files…don’t fiddle with it!
I own a MacBook Pro and a Windows Vista desktop and use the desktop to stream media to everything in my house, but it has almost run out of hard drive room. I also wanted to be able to transfer files between my Mac and PC and even though drives are usually pre-formatted to NTFS and can’t be written on a Mac, it took me 3 minutes max to fix this. Im sure a lot of Mac users would enjoy this drive because its small and has the same coat of color as the Macbook Pro aluminum series.
Here’s the Mac fix. - Leave the drive formatted to NTFS, go download “NTFS-3G” off of Apple’s website in the Downloads section, just search “ntfs-3g apple” in Google and it’s the first hit. Install the .dmg, restart computer, and you should be able to write to the drive on Mac and PC now.
