Cold Noses: MooMoo with Zig-Zag; Jacksonville-area events

Moomoo is one of five 1-month-old kittens that came with their mother. They are all weaned and mom just got passed this week. His brother and sisters are all different colors, but the only moomoo black and white. They went through a round of shots and is heartworm negative. Moomoo and his family can be found playing Services of Nassau County animals, 86078 Route license, Fernandina Beach.Hours: 11:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Zig-Zag is a mixture of dog four months. It is the last of nine brothers and sisters who all came together. He is current on his shots, but needs to be sterilized. Zig-Zag is playful and loves to cuddle. He needs some training but is very intelligent. Visit Zig-Zag to the St. Johns County Pet Center, 130 N. - Mark your calendars for the First Coast has at least three animal-related events in the coming weeks. Today is the Day of the Dog Art Market Riverside. There will be a parade and dog costume contest, awards, portraits of animals and Bark N 'Howl bakery.

September 3rd is a volunteer recognition event at the Animal Care and Control Clay County. The stands of different rescue groups of animals as well as free hot dogs and soda will be available. Pet cheap shots will be available from 8 to 9:30 in the morning to provide low cost vaccinations.The event takes place away CCACC at 3984 Florida 16 West in Green Cove Springs 8:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Hancock and Kit Garrett opened Blue Dog Bakery & Cafe in 1998, and in the years since it has become a Louisville institution, lauded for its superb artisanal breads and deft lunches. Last winter, Blue Dog rolled out the Red Hog Tapas program for a test run, and implemented it this spring as a permanent fixture on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The Red Hog Tapas name derives from Hancock's herd of free-ranging Red Wattle Hogs (a heritage breed that's targeted for conservation by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy), and the kitchen uses those pigs nose-to-tail in ways both novel and traditional. But it's worth noting that at least one-third of the menu is vegetarian-friendly, and nearly any item can be made meat-free upon request. You could start with the list of montaditos, little open-faced sandwiches perched on crusts of bread that bring together exquisite combinations of color, flavor and texture: a plump sardine perched atop a smear of hummus, sprinkled with mint, cilantro and a generous sprinkle of chopped egg; house-cured salmon atop a luscious smear of Boursin cheese with cool slices of cucumber and shards of scallion; a slice of ripe pear bedded down with a bit of Spanish sheep's milk cheese, a paper-thin sliver of ham from free-ranging, acorn-fed Spanish pigs, and a whiff of wildflower honey; or perhaps a slice of spicy, house-made salami, some tender Basque cheese, and an olive-caper relish so good you could eat alone by the spoonful. (All montaditos are $4.) The list of cheeses, salads and sandwiches features a couple of the best salads in the city: one with endive, spicy arugula, tart green Granny Smith slices, a touch of walnuts and a sprinkle of Maytag Blue ($8); and my personal favorite, the panzanella, a Tuscan-influenced mix of fresh peas and asparagus, red bell peppers and red onions, arugula, mint, feta cheese and crusty Blue Dog croutons ($7). The cheese board ($12) and charcuterie board ($12) have to rank at the top of the city's current offerings, the former because it includes some little-known gems, the latter because the house-made coppa, mortadella, soppressata and chorizo are subtle. As you might expect from a rigorously artisanal bakery, the hand-formed pizzas (I love the one topped with asparagus, mushroom, ricotta and arugula) are founded on a magnificent crust ($12).
