The Yonemuras and other visitors from Japan were decked out in lei and greeted to a reception at University of Hawaii Maui College, where they met their host families.

The Japanese were brought to Hawaii by the Aloha Initiative. They were greeted with applause, hula dancers and lei on Oahu, where they also met Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa, the initiative's honorary chairman.

Host families on Oahu took in 22 residents, and the others proceeded to Maui, where they will stay at the homes of 23 families for as long as 90 days.

"Maui is (such a) beautiful island," said Akiko Miura, of Fukushima Prefecture, while she sat with her host family at UH-MC. "I feel very welcomed."

Miura, who is accompanied by two sons, Raian, 9, and Kiryu, 8, said she and her family had been forced to leave their home in Fukushima because of the threat of radiation from the nearby Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.

Her husband, a flower farmer, stayed home to work on the nursery, but Miura hoped that her husband could join them on Maui.

Wailuku resident Colin Yamamoto told Miura it would be all right if her husband stayed with him and his family.

"Daijoubu," or "fine, OK," he told Miura in Japanese.

Miura put her hands together and bowed her head in appreciation.

Yamamoto, a Maui County Fire Department captain, said he is happy to help out, adding that he has friends from Japan who come and stay with him all the time. "This is normal," he said.

Yamamoto lived in Japan 21 years ago when he was a foreign exchange student while attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He can speak Japanese.

But for the Kikuchi family of Kula, the language barrier will be somewhat of a challenge.

Bert Kikuchi, a history professor at Maui College, said he doesn't speak much Japanese.

He and his wife, Irish, are taking in Yonemura and her daughter.

At the reception, Irish Kikuchi was busy using an interpreter to find out about her new guests, including what they like to eat.
