Op-Ed: Davide Nardi on Training to Become an English Language Teacher

On this day inevitable graduation college (which had suddenly emerged with a hazy vision of how the next few days would ensue), I was at sea, like many others in the ship fade unemployment. But it was not pure laziness that led me to this predicament. Instead, it was that after four years of college, I still did not know what job I wanted. One thing was certain: I wanted to travel abroad.

I had heard about teaching English abroad during my first year, but I do not give it much thought immediately.I hid away from the idea in my mind for later, and of course, when graduation came and I still had no job prospects, I began to examine and researching my options. Research has proven difficult, first because I did not know where the programs were the most legitimate. I asked a friend who had worked for a year as a teacher, and recommended to get a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), saying his training really ready. I looked and applied, and almost immediately I was hooked.

Administered by the University of Cambridge, the CELTA is an initial qualification for people with teaching experience little or no before, and it is also one of the oldest and most recognized English as a Second Language (ESL) in the world. I did my training at the site of the House Education Boston, which is located in Quincy Market. The four-week course has proven to be one of the most rigorous academic experience I ever had, but also one of the most rewarding.Every morning we started with three hours of "input sessions" in which instructors can teach the methodology of teaching ESL with demonstrations and workshops covering different types of language courses. After these sessions, students have "teaching practice" every afternoon, where we would be divided into three groups (each with a trainer) to teach three different classes of international students. They have tested all of later-we started teaching about two days!

Despite the lessons of the name "teaching practice. The only thing that made the practice, perhaps, was that we were not paid. International students (who offered free lessons to our Guinea pigs) were at levels pre-intermediate and upper intermediate English. Three students from each group would be a lesson every day, and students who are not teaching would be to observe and give feedback. The experience and feedback was invaluable and with each lesson improved my teaching. I became authoritative and confident, putting into practice the methodology morning sessions. CELTA trainers also observed, and we evaluated in our teaching practices.Their standards and expectations are increasing every lesson, and, therefore, that kept the pressure on. But it was a pressure of need CELTA course was not simply to make notes, but to become an effective teacher.

That‘s why we were so thrilled to be included in her latest pieces “ ESL Games for Adjectives and Relative Clauses .”

Here’s a little advice from Stacy:

“Adjectives and relative clauses are two components of English grammar. In order to learn how to correctly use adjectives and relative clauses, ESL students must constantly practice describing people, places or things using adjectives and creating sentences that use relative clauses.  Games  help make this practice enjoyable and keep it from becoming repetitive…”
