Child's body exhumed in connection with decades-old case
SYCAMORE - Authorities exhumed the body of a girl of 7-year-old Sycamore was abducted and murdered over 50 years, and the man accused of his murder is on the way to Illinois to face charges.
Monique Bond, spokeswoman for the Illinois State Police, said this morning while at Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore that the Office of the DeKalb County State had a court order to exhume the remains of Maria Ridulph. The girl was abducted in a December 3, 1957 Sycamore Street, and his remains were found nearly five months later in Jo Daviess County. She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
At a news conference this morning, DeKalb County State Attorney Clay Campbell said he has not made the decision to exhume the body Ridulph lightly. He said science has advanced from when she was killed more than half a century, and the authorities hope that new technologies can help the investigation.
The court order for exhumation was received Friday and was signed by the DeKalb County Presiding Judge Kurt Klein, said Campbell. It is sealed, meaning its content can not be disclosed.
Maria's older brother, Charles Ridulph, said during the news conference that it has been "a very difficult time, to put it lightly."
He said the family was thankful to all agencies involved as to how they have respectfully treated the family. The family has been given as much information as they need to know, as well as advanced warning so as to not to be shocked by news in the media.
Although the events are "difficult and unsettling," Charles Ridulph said the family understands the necessity of what has happened and is in agreement with the way the case is being handled.
Campbell said he would not comment on the condition of the remains out of respect for the Ridulph family, but said all of the experts involved in the exhumation are "very, very satisfied" with what was found. The remains will be examined by the medical examiner from Cook County as well as the DeKalb County Coroner and forensic anthropologists.
Campbell said "nobody is more hopeful than I am" that the examination of Ridulph's remains will provide more information.
Campbell said authorities didn't want to make a decision to exhume her remains in haste, and wanted to consult the family. Prior to the news conference, Campbell said the exhumation process began early this morning. His office, along with ISP, Sycamore Police and the FBI, assisted, as did the owners of Elmwood Cemetery and the coroner's office.
