Thousands of seabirds wash up near Dargaville

Thousands of sub-Antarctic prion birds have been found unwell on the Kaipara's west coast beaches today according to the Department of Conservation.

Kauri Coast DOC office community relations adviser Darren Jones says several hundred birds have been found dead also.

Mr Jones says the birds arrived overnight, "there's a few mixed birds in there including, Ferry Prions and Narrow and Broad billed Prions.

He says there are far too many birds for the Whangarei Native Bird recovery centre to cope with, "our guys are getting out there and moving the unwell birds behind the sand dunes to allow them to rest".

"All they're looking for is a bit of shelter, with the strong winds we've been having lately they're just turning up tired."

Mr Jones says the workload for staff is huge, "so we're looking to work all day tomorrow also".

He says staff are bringing along family and friends to help out also.

Several of the birds have been found in Dargaville township and the local vet centre has been inundated.

Dargaville Vet Joyce Gallagher says the number of birds they're seeing is just unheard of.

"We've never before encountered so many at once."

Mrs Gallagher says they usually get one sea bird brought into them once or twice every three months, never 11 in one day.

The birds have been located in Dargaville and close to the coast.

"They're just sitting there and not really moving, they're just exhausted," she says.

Staff at the Dargaville Veterinary Services clinic have been busy keeping the birds warm and keeping them rested to restore their energy levels before releasing them.

Mrs Gallagher says they plan on releasing the birds back out at the beach.

Dargaville resident Christina Cocurollo says she found a broadbill Prion on her doorstep this morning.

"It was just sitting there."

She says her children played with the bird, "it was so still," before they decided to take it into the vet clinic in town.

DOC says storms around the lower North Island had blown the sea birds inland to areas where they were not typically seen, with reports of prions washing up from Wellington to New Plymouth.
